Modeling Clay

Tribal Stamped Earrings

By Marisa Pawelko

Summary:

Tribal jewelry is the epitome of the boho style! What better way to customize your bohemian fashions than with your very own hand stamped clay earrings? Make the ethnic patterns really pop with the addition of colored sand textured details!

What’s Needed:

Begin by rolling out a slab of Air Dry Modeling Clay with the Clay Roller Kit. For this project we used the 3/16” rails.

Next select your favorite ethnic style stamp.

Stamp the image two times into the clay as shown.

Trim away the excess clay with the knife tool from the Sculpey Clay Starter 3 Piece Tool Kit.

Move the pieces onto to a paper towel and carefully smooth out the edges of the shapes with your fingers.

Next create the hanging loops for your earrings out of jewelry wire using the round nose pliers.

Insert the hanging loops into the clay shapes as shown and set the pieces aside to dry fully.

Once the clay is fully dry, apply a thin layer of decoupage sealer to the front and back of the clay shapes.

Once the decoupage sealer is dry, accent the raised portions of the stamped image with craft paint. For this project we used black clay with lime green and magenta accents, but feel free to mix it up and make it your own!

Once the paint is dry, select pouches of color cordinating sand from the Sandtastik Complete Classic Colored Sand Sampler Set.

Carefully apply a generous layer of tacky glue to the first painted section of the design that you wish to accent.

Pour the color coordinating sand onto the wet glue as shown.

Gently tap off the excess sand. Set the piece aside to dry fully and repeat the process on the other stamped shape.

Once those sections are dry, continue with this same technique until all of the colored areas are accented with coordinating sand.

The colorful sand gives the pieces an ethnic handmade feel, and adds texture and dimension!

Once the pieces are fully dry, brush away any excess sand with a dry paintbrush. Then simply add the earring hooks with the pliers and you are ready to go out on the town and rock your customized tribal stamped earrings in style!
