Supplies Needed:

Step 1

Clay Slab

Roll out a 1/4” slab of clay using a rolling pin and measuring sticks.

Step 2

Mold

Place the plastic salsa bowl mold upside down on top of the clay slab.
Trace around the lip of the bowl using a needle clay tool.

Remove the excess clay from around the mold.

Lift the clay off of the work surface and gently push it down into the mold.

Step 3

Wall

Roll out a 1/4” thick strip of clay.

Cut a rectangular piece of clay that is a 1/2”W and is the same diameter as the rim of the mold.

Add some water to the rim of the clay circle shape using a wet fingertip.
Add the clay rectangle on top of the clay circle.

Smooth the seam together between the two clay pieces using the modeling tool.

Smooth out any bumps with a damp sponge.

Step 4

Leather Hard

Allow the clay to stiffen to a leather hard state. Gently remove it from the mold.

Add additional clay into the cracks of the outside wall of the bowl if needed.

Smooth the outside seam together using the modeling tool.

Smooth any remaining bumps using a damp sponge.
*NOTE: Use a Clay Sculpting Wheel to aide in the process.

Cover the bowl with a plastic bag and set aside.

Step 5

Feet

Use a feet sprig to create the bowl’s footed base.
*NOTE: This mold can be found at: https://www.ceramicsuperstore.com

Take a lump of clay and press it into one of the slots in the feet sprig.

Remove the clay and repeat the process two more times until a total of three feet are made.

Score and slip each foot onto the bottom of the clay bowl.

A thin coil can be rolled out of clay and wrapped around each foot to secure it to the bottom of the bowl.

Step 6

Dry

Allow clay to fully dry. Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity.
