Supplies Needed:
- SIO-2® PRNI - Black Stoneware Clay with Impalpable Grog
- Rolling pin
- 1/4” measuring sticks
- Texture rolling pin
- 6” x 6” and 3” x 6” tagboard template
- Activ-Tools: Clay Tools Set
- Water bowl
- Sponge
- 3” Poly Foam Pad
- Paint brush
- Glaze
Step 1
Prepare Clay
Roll a smooth 1/4” slab of clay using measuring sticks and a rolling pin.
Step 2
Texture
Create a texture on the clay by firmly pressing down a texture rolling pin over the smooth slab.
Step 3
Walls
Measure and cut a 6” x 6” tagboard template.
Place the template on top of the clay slab and cut out 2 clay squares using the clay tool’s rolling cutter and set aside.
Step 4
Base
Measure and cut a 3” x 6” tagboard template.
Roll out another 1/4” thick clay slab.
Leave this slab smooth and without texture.
Place the template on top of the clay slab and cut out 1 rectangle using the template and clay tool’s rolling cutter.
Step 5
Assemble
Score one edge of the square shaped clay slabs.
Score two of the long edges of the rectangle shaped clay slab using the rough cut blade tool.
Smooth water over the scoring lines to create slip.
Roll a think coil of clay.
Join one of the clay walls to the clay bottom by placing the clay coil over the seam.
Smooth the seam together using the clay smoothing tool.
Smooth out any bumps in the clay’s service with a damp sponge.
Repeat the process on the opposite side.
Gently turn the clay form upside down and drape over a 3” poly foam pad.
Join the underlying seam together using the clay smoothing tool.
Step 6
Dry
Allow the clay to fully dry. Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity.
*NOTE: Leave the clay to dry while it’s draped over the poly foam pad.
As soon as the clay becomes leather hard, remove the foam.
Step 7
Bisque Fire
Fire clay in the kiln to cone 04.
Step 8
Glaze
Apply glaze to the bisque form according to manufacturer’s directions.
*NOTE: This project was glazed using - Mayco SW_004 Stoneware Zinc Free Clear.
Step 9
Glaze Fire
Fire the glazed form in the kiln. Follow manufacturer’s firing guidelines.
Firing range: Cone 6-10 (2269o-2381oF)
