Original Project Design by Modern Surrealist Marisa Pawelko
This fun and easy project allows you to create your own customized decorative bowl by imprinting your favorite little toys, charms and collectibles into Sandtastik Modeling Clay!
- Sandtastik Modeling Clay - White 3.3 lbs Brick (Air Dry)
- Baby Powder
- Various trinkets, collectibles, jewelry, etc.
- Rolling Pin
- Clay Tool Kit
- Hobby Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Mod Podge
STEP 1 Gather all your supplies and set aside.
STEP 2 Dust your work area with baby powder. With the rolling pin, roll out an even slab of Sandtastik Modeling Clay approximately ½”thick.
STEP 3 Dust the inside of the plastic bowl with baby powder.
STEP 4 Using the plastic bowl as a mold, carefully drape the slab into the bowl and smooth out any wrinkles with your fingers or the Clay Modeling Tools. Slightly dampening your fingers helps to smooth out any wrinkles.
STEP 5 Press slab into the plastic bowl.
STEP 6 Trim the excess clay using the Clay Modeling Tool.
STEP 7 Smooth out the edges of the clay bowl.
STEP 8 Dust the inside surface of the clay bowl. This helps to prevent the trinkets from sticking when making impressions.
STEP 9 Use various trinkets to make impressions to the inside of the bowl.
STEP 10 Press the items no more than halfway into the clay.
STEP 11 Continue to press items into the bowl. You can use the modeling tools to define shapes or touch up any lines that may have been missed with the imprinting.
STEP 12 Smooth over and touch up any cracks with wet fingers.
STEP 13 Allow clay bowl to air dry within the plastic bowl form.
STEP 14 The clay bowl will shrink slightly when dried. You can tell the bowl is fully dried when it releases itself from the form and is no longer cool to the touch.
STEP 15 Once dry, remove clay bowl from molding bowl. File edges smooth with an emery board.
STEP 16 You now have an awesome custom made decorative fossil bowl! You may leave the bowl unfinished, or you can also finish it in a variety of ways. Feel free to make it your own! For this design I used: Neon and Black acrylic paint, Glow in the Dark Mod Podge and Mod Podge Extreme Glitter in Black and Hologram.
*This bowl is for decorative/display purposes only and is not intended for use with food.
