Step 1
Prepare the CelluClay
Mix the CelluClay’ according to package directions.
Add 32oz. of warm water to 1 lb. of CelluClay, mixing in a zip top bag.
Knead with fingers until CelluClay reaches the consistency of clay or stiff dough with no dry spots.
Add more dry CelluClay if mixture is too wet or soft, and more water if CelluClay if too dry or stiff.
Remove CelluClay from bag when done mixing.
Step 2
Armature
Build an armature structure for each cherry using a large styrofoam ball.
Place each styrofoam ball in a shallow bowl to help it from not rolling around on the work surface.
Step 3
Layer
Cover the top of the armature with CelluClay.
Smooth out any bumps in the CelluClay with wet fingertips.
Apply several coats of CelluClay as needed. Allowing the individual coats to dry in between layers.
Step 4
Dry
Allow the CelluClay to air dry. Humidity levels will impact drying time.
The CelluClay will lighten in color and become harder as it is drying.
The CelluClay will feel room temperature when dry and have a bright white color appearance.
Step 5
Stem
When the applied CelluClay has dried, turn the armature upside down.
Cut 2 pieces of hose to desired length.
Poke a hole into the top of each styrofoam ball using a hole punch or similar object.
Add some adhesive into each hole and insert the hoses. Allow the glue to dry.
Step 6
Second Half
Add additional CelluClay to the top of the styrofoam ball like in step 2.
Add a small amount of CelluClay at the base of each hose.
Remove the shallow bowls from under the CelluClay sculpture. Add a small amount of Celluclay under each the ball to balance it on the table top and prevent it from rolling.
Turn the sculpture upside down to dry.
Step 7
Dry
Allow the newly applied CelluClay to dry.
Step 8
Stem
Create a leaf pattern by drawing it’s shape on a piece of paper and cutting it out.
Trace the leaf shape onto the felt using a pen.
Cut the leaf shape out.
Tape the two hoses together using some duct tape.
Attach the felt leaf to the stem using tape.
Cover the tape with a layer of CelluClay.
Paint the hose with a coat of paint primer.
Step 9
Smooth
Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough areas or bumps on the sculpture’s surface.
Step 10
Color
Color can be added to the sculpture using mixed media.
*Acrylic paint applied to the hose material to create the stem’s color
*Tissue paper collaged to CelluClay balls to create the cherry’s color.
*Varnish and glitter added to give the sculpture it’s shine.
Step 11
Dry
Allow the sculpture to air dry.
