Supplies Needed:
- One of these porcelain clay bodies: SIO-2® ANETO - White Porcelain, SIO-2® LAGOON Turquoise Blue Porcelain, SIO-2® UPSALA - Blue Porcelain, or SIO-2® BLACK ICE - Black Porcelain
- Rolling pin
- Decorative texture rolling pin
- Plastic wrap
- Bird and teardrop shape cutter
- Sculpey Tools Clay Tool Starter Set
- Water bowl
- Paint brush
- Glaze
- Adhesive
- Ring loop wire clips
Step 1
Prepare The Clay
Flatten out a 1” slab of clay using a rolling pin.
Firmly press a decorative texture rolling pin over the slab of clay.
Step 2
Bird Body
Cover the clay slab with plastic wrap.
Position the bird shape cutter over the decorative texture pattern and firmly press it down into the clay slab.
Remove the excess clay from around the shape cutter.
Roll a 1/4” clay slab of clay.
Firmly press a decorative texture rolling pin over the slab of clay.
Cover the clay slab with plastic wrap.
Position the bird shape cutter over the decorative texture pattern in the opposite direction of the first one cut. Cut the second bird shape out of the clay.
Step 3
Bird Wings
Use the teardrop shape cutter to cut out two clay shapes for he bird’s wings.
Remove the excess clay from around the wings shapes.
Step 4
Join
Score and slip the thin bird body onto the thick bird body shape.
Smooth the seam between the two pieces with the flat ended tool.
Roll the decorative texture roller over the seam to complete the patterned form.
Step 5
Beak
Gently pinch the clay together towards the front of the body to form the bird’s beak.
Step 6
Attach
Score and slip one of the teardrop shapes onto each side of the bird’s body.
Step 7
Eye
Roll two small spheres of clay.
Score and slip one sphere onto each side of the body near the bird’s beak.
Insert the pointed tool into each sphere to mark the eye’s pupil.
Step 8
Hole
Create a deep hole on top of the bird’s body with the long blunt ended tool.
Step 9
Dry
Allow the clay to fully dry.
Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity.
Step 10
Bisque Fire
Fire the clay in a kiln to cone 04.
Step 11
Glaze
Apply glaze according to manufacturer’s directions.
*NOTE: This project uses Mayco SW-004 Zinc-Free Clear stoneware glaze.
Step 12
Glaze Fire
Fire the glazed piece in the kiln. Follow manufacturer’s firing guidelines.
Firing range: Cone 6-10 (2269o-2381oF)
Step 13
Hardware
Add adhesive into the hole at the top of the bird’s body. Insert one of the ring loop
wire clips into the hole and allow it to dry.
