PRNF is a black sculpture clay body with 40% fine grog (up to 35 Mesh). Formulated for artistic ceramics, it is ideal for sculpture.

The high content of grog confers a beautiful textured surface and an excellent behavior during drying and firing. Its beautiful and intense black firing color in oxidizing atmosphere is unique to the PRN range and becomes an ideal artistic mean of expression. In reducing atmosphere, metallic effects with shades of blue are obtained.

FAQ for PRNF clay, with answers provided by SIO-2®

Is iron oxide used to make the clay black?
No. This clay uses a very dark clay and a small quantity of manganese (<5%) to get the right color.

Is PRNF suitable for tableware?
No. PRNF clay bodies are meant for sculpture and have not been tested to be food-grade according to ISO 6486 standards.

What glazes are recommended for this clay?
SIO-2® Brilliant Gold 10% glaze (displayed on the bowl picture above) can be thinly applied with a brush or airbrush to a clean, dust-free area to create a stunning, authentic-looking golden surface. The firing temperature ranges between 1022º – 1382ºF, depending on the type of ceramic or glass application. Use zinc-free glazes to prevent bubbling or color changes.

What color is the clay when bisque fired to 06? Is it still black?
Honestly speaking, the color of the bisque is not so important as the potter normally fires it a second time at the recommended firing temperature (cone 5 – 7) or the object will be glazed. The color of the PRNF cone 06 bisque of course does not achieve the intensive black color as firing at the recommended temperature of cone 5 – 7. At a low temperature the color is different, it’s lighter (brown-grey). The black color develops at high temperatures, from cone 1.
