Supplies Needed:
- SIO-2® PF - Red, PA - White, or PM - Black Earthenware Clay
- Rolling pin
- 1/4” measuring sticks
- Paper bowl
- Sculpey® Clay Starter 3pc Tool Kit
- ACTIVA® The Wheel Rotating Clay Sculpting Platform
- Water bowl
- Sponge
- Paint brush
- Glaze
Step 1
Prepare Clay
Roll a 1/4” slab of clay using measuring sticks and a rolling pin.
Step 2
Circle Shape
Place the paper bowl upside down onto the clay slab.
Trace around the bowl’s perimeter using the needle tool.
Remove the access clay from around the bowl mold.
Step 3
Mold
Turn the bowl right side up.
Gently press the clay down into the bowl mold using one’s knuckles and finger tips.
Step 4
Smooth
Place the clay bowl on top of the rotating clay platform.
Smooth the inside of the bowl with a damp sponge as the platform is being rotated.
Step 5
Dry
Allow clay to fully dry. Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity.
Remove the clay from the bowl mold once the clay has finished drying.
Smooth any rough edges around the rim of the bowl using a damp sponge.
Step 6
Bisque Fire
Fire clay in the kiln to cone 04.
Step 7
Glaze
Apply glaze according to manufacturer’s directions.
*NOTE: This tutorial uses Mayco FN-301 Marshmallow White as the base coat to the overall bowl form.
With Mayco’s Stroke & Coat glazes applied over the base coat.
Step 8
Glaze Fire
Fire the glazed piece in the kiln. Follow manufacturer’s firing guidelines.
Firing range: 1778-1931ºF / Cone 06-04
*NOTE: This bowl was fired using a clear coat of glaze revealing the clay’s natural color.
