Bee Vase

 

Learn to make this simple bee figure to decorate a vase.

Shopping List

SANDTASTIK:
Sculpey® III: Black - 2 oz -- 1 block
Sculpey® III: Yellow - 2 oz -- 1 block
Sculpey® III: Red - 2 oz -- 1 block

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES:
1mm rubber tubing (Found in the jewelry dept. of a craft store)
Heart shaped paper punch
Vellum (opaque was used in the project)
Super glue
22 gauge black wire
Wire cutters
White glue
Cordial glass with a handle
Red chalk or blush
Q-tip swap or soft bristled paint brush
Toothpick
2 black seed beads
Dried flower
Clean working surface (cardboard or ceramic tile for example)
Baking surface (aluminum covered cookie sheet or ceramic tile for example)
Oven preheated at 275 degree F
Recommend internal thermometer to insure correct baking temperature
Timers


 

Getting Started:

Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

 

 Step 1

Bee's body is egg shaped piece of Yellow clay, approximately 1" long. Cut a small piece of wire and insert into the top of the body

Roll a thin sheet of Black clay; this is the bee’s band. The bee band is 1/16th of an inch wide and wrapped around the lower half of the body.

 

 

 

Step 3

The arms are tapered logs of Yellow clay bent into an "L" shape. The left hand is wrapped around a toothpick. Attach the Arms to the bee's body.

Dab white glue to the bee's bottom and press on the glass handle. Dab glue to the bee's right hand and press against the glass.

Poke 2 holes into the bottom of the body where the "legs" go in.

 

 

 

 

Step 6

The boots are thick tapered logs of Black clay bent into an "L" shape. Dab an end of the rubber tubing and insert into the boot. Set aside

 

 

 

Step 7
The head of the bee is an egg shape piece of Yellow. The nose is an oval shape of Black clay. Press it on the head and insert 2 seed bead eyes. Attach the head to the body. Blush the cheeks.

 

 

 

  Step 8
1 small ball of Black clay is attached to the ends of the antennas. Insert the antennas into the bee's head.

 

 

 

 

Step 9
The back button is an oval shaped piece of Yellow clay with 2 "button holes". Bake unattached to the bee.

Bake everything following manufacturer's instructions.
